Muhammad ibn Yahya and al-Hasan ibn Mudrik al-Tahhan narrated to us; they said: Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us; Abu ʿAwanah narrated to us, from Dawud ibn ʿAbdullah al-Awdi, from ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Musli, from al-Ashʿath ibn Qays, who said: I was ʿUmar’s guest one night. In the middle of the night, he got up and began striking his wife, so I stood between them. When he returned to his bed, he said to me, ‘Ashʿath, remember something I heard from the Messenger of Allah: “A man is not to be asked why he strikes his wife, and do not sleep except after praying Witr.”’ I forgot the third thing. Muhammad ibn Khalid ibn Khidash narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Abu ʿAwanah narrated to us with the same chain, reporting something similar.
