Abu ʿUmar, Hafs ibn ʿAmr, and ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; they said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah cursed the women who tattoo and those who seek tattoos, the women who pluck facial hair, and the women who file their teeth for beauty, altering Allah’s creation. This reached a woman of Banu Asad called Umm Yaʿqub. She came to him and said, ‘I have heard that you said such-and-such.’ He replied, ‘Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah cursed, when it is in the Book of Allah?’ She said, ‘I have read all that is between its covers, and I did not find it there.’ He said, ‘If you have read it, then you have found it. Have you not read, “Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it”?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘The Messenger of Allah forbade it.’ She said, ‘I suppose your family does these things.’ He said, ‘Go and look.’ She went and looked, but saw none of what she had expected. She said, ‘I saw nothing.’ ʿAbdullah said, ‘If they were as you said, they would not have remained in our company.’

The closing phrase ما جامعتنا is rendered as ‘would not have remained in our company’; the wording is idiomatic and its precise force may be broader than literal gathering.
قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَوْ كَانَتْ كَمَا تَقُولِينَ مَا جَامَعَتْنَا .
The expression ما جامعتنا literally refers to not being together with us; in context it may mean they would not have stayed in our company or household.
Does ‘would not have remained in our company’ preserve the intended force of the closing phrase?
