Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us: Abu al-Yaman narrated to us: Shuʿayb informed us, from al-Zuhri: ʿAli ibn al-Husayn told me that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed him that ʿAli ibn Abi Talib had sought to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl while Fatimah, the Prophet’s daughter, was already with him. When Fatimah heard of this, she went to the Prophet and said, ‘Your people are saying that you do not become angry on behalf of your daughters, while here is ʿAli marrying the daughter of Abu Jahl.’ Al-Miswar said: The Prophet stood, and I heard him say the testimony of faith, then say: ‘To proceed: I gave Abu al-ʿAs ibn al-Rabiʿ my daughter in marriage, and he spoke to me and was truthful with me. Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, is a part of me, and I dislike that you distress her. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah will never be joined to one man.’ ʿAli then withdrew from the proposal.
