Abu Kurayb narrated to us: ʿAbaʾah ibn Kulayb al-Laythi Abu Ghassan narrated to us, from Juwayriyah ibn Asmaʾ, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar: A man from the desert came to the Prophet and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, my wife has given birth to a black boy on my bed, though we are a household in which there has never been a black person.’ He asked, ‘Do you have camels?’ The man said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘What colors are they?’ He said, ‘Red.’ He asked, ‘Are any of them black?’ He said, ‘No.’ He asked, ‘Are any grayish?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘How did that happen?’ He said, ‘Perhaps an ancestral strain was passed on.’ He said, ‘Then perhaps this son of yours inherited an ancestral strain.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The term أَوْرَق refers to a grayish camel; the exchange uses inherited color variation as an analogy.

  • ‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَلَعَلَّ ابْنَكَ هَذَا نَزَعَهُ عِرْقٌ ‏"‏ ‏.

The phrase نَزَعَهُ عِرْقٌ literally says that a lineage or ancestral strain drew him toward a trait; the precise English equivalent is uncertain.

Would ‘inherited a family trait’ be clearer than ‘inherited an ancestral strain’?
