The Chapters Regarding Zakat

Isa ibn Hammad al-Misri informed us; al-Layth ibn Sa‘d informed us, from Sa‘id ibn Abi Sa‘id al-Maqburi, from Sa‘id ibn Yasar, that he heard Abu Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Whoever gives charity from what is good—and Allah accepts only what is good—the Most Merciful takes it in His right hand, even if it is a single date. It grows in the palm of the Most Merciful until it becomes greater than a mountain. He nurtures it for the giver as one of you nurtures his foal or his young camel.’

Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Waki‘ narrated to us; al-A‘mash narrated to us, from Khaythamah, from Adi ibn Hatim, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘There is none of you except that his Lord will speak to him, with no interpreter between them. He will look ahead of him, and the Fire will confront him. He will look to his right and see only what he sent ahead. He will look to his left and see only what he sent ahead. So whoever among you can protect himself from the Fire, even with half a date, let him do so.’

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; they said: Waki‘ narrated to us, from Ibn Awn, from Hafsah bint Sirin, from al-Rabab, Umm al-Raih bint Sulay‘, from Salman ibn Amir al-Dabbi, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Charity given to a poor person is charity; when given to a relative, it is two things: charity and maintaining kinship.’
