Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us; Jarir informed us, from Mansur, from Abu Wa’il, from Samurah ibn Sahm—a man from his people—who said: I stayed with Abu Hashim ibn ‘Utbah while he was wounded by a spear. Mu‘awiyah came to visit him, and Abu Hashim wept. Mu‘awiyah said: “Why are you weeping, maternal uncle? Is some pain distressing you, or is it over this world, whose best part has already passed?” He replied: “Neither. But the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave me advice, and I wish I had followed it.” He said: “Perhaps you will live to see wealth distributed among people, but a servant and a mount for Allah’s cause are all you will need from it.” I lived to see that, but I accumulated wealth.
