Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from ‘Ali ibn Zayd, from Aws ibn Khalid, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The one who sits listening to wisdom and then speaks of nothing he heard from its speaker except evil is like a man who comes to a shepherd and says, ‘Shepherd, give me a sheep from your flock to slaughter.’ The shepherd says, ‘Go and take by the ear the best one.’ So he goes and takes the sheepdog by the ear.” Abu al-Hasan ibn Salamah said: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim narrated this to us; Musa narrated to us; Hammad narrated a similar report, with the wording: “Take a sheep by the ear of the best one.”
