Muhammad ibn Bashshar told us: Muhammad ibn Ja‘far told us: Shu‘bah told us, from al-‘Ala ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet came to the cemetery, greeted its people, and said: ‘Peace be upon you, dwelling of believing people. Allah willing, we will join you.’ Then he said, ‘I wish we had seen our brothers.’ They asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, are we not your brothers?’ He replied, ‘You are my Companions; my brothers are those who will come after me, and I will arrive before you at the Basin.’ They asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, how will you recognize those of your community who have not yet come?’ He said, ‘What do you think: if a man had horses with white blazes and white markings on their legs among horses that were entirely dark, would he not recognize them?’ They replied, ‘Certainly.’ He said, ‘They will come on the Day of Resurrection with bright blazes and white markings from the traces of ablution.’ He said, ‘I will arrive before them at the Basin.’ Then he said, ‘Indeed, men will be driven away from my Basin just as a stray camel is driven away. I will call to them, “Come here!” but it will be said, “They changed after you, and they kept turning back on their heels.” I will then say, “Away with them, away with them!”’
