Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: ‘A pledged item does not become lost to its owner, who pledged it; its benefit belongs to him and its liability rests on him.’ Al-Shafi‘i transmitted it as a mursal report. A similar or near-identical report is also narrated from him, without disagreement, through an unbroken chain from Abu Hurayrah. The listed gradings have not been studied (al-Albani).
