وَعَن سَلمَة بن الْأَكْوَع قَالَ: كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ أُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ فَقَالُوا: صَلِّ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ: «هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا: لَا فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِجِنَازَةٍ أُخْرَى فَقَالَ: «هَل عَلَيْهِ دين؟» قَالُوا: نعم فَقَالَ: «فَهَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟» قَالُوا: ثَلَاثَةَ دَنَانِيرَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا ثمَّ أُتِي بالثالثة فَقَالَ: «هَلْ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ؟» قَالُوا: ثَلَاثَةُ دَنَانِيرَ قَالَ: «هَلْ تَرَكَ شَيْئًا؟» قَالُوا: لَا قَالَ: «صلوا على صَاحبكُم» قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَة: صلى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسلم عَلَيْهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَعَلَيَّ دَيْنُهُ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ. رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيّ

Salamah ibn al-Akwa‘ reported: We were sitting with the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) when a funeral bier was brought. They said: ‘Pray over him.’ He asked: ‘Does he owe a debt?’ They said: ‘No,’ so he prayed over him. Another bier was brought. He asked: ‘Does he owe a debt?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He asked: ‘Did he leave anything?’ They said: ‘Three dinars.’ So he prayed over him. A third bier was brought. He asked: ‘Does he owe a debt?’ They said: ‘Three dinars.’ He asked: ‘Did he leave anything?’ They said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Pray over your companion.’ Abu Qatadah said: ‘Pray over him, Messenger of Allah, and I will take responsibility for his debt.’ So he prayed over him. Al-Bukhari transmitted it. Its listed grading is sahih (al-Albani).
