وَعَنِ الشَّرِيدِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَيُّ الْوَاجِدِ يُحِلُّ عِرْضَهُ وَعُقُوبَتَهُ» قَالَ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ: يُحِلُّ عِرْضَهُ: يُغَلَّظُ لَهُ. وَعُقُوبَتَهُ: يُحْبَسُ لَهُ. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَالنَّسَائِيّ

Al-Sharid reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: ‘The delay of a solvent debtor makes his reputation and punishment lawful.’ Ibn al-Mubarak explained: ‘His reputation becomes subject to stern reproach, and he may be imprisoned as punishment.’ Abu Dawud and al-Nasa’i transmitted it. Its listed grading is sahih (al-Albani).
