Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Jahsh reported: We were sitting in the courtyard of the mosque, where funeral biers were placed, with the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) sitting among us. He raised his gaze toward the sky and looked, then lowered his gaze and put his hand on his forehead. He said: ‘Glory be to Allah! Glory be to Allah! How severe a command has been revealed!’ We remained quiet for the rest of that day and night, and saw nothing but good until morning. Muhammad said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace): ‘What severe command was revealed?’ He replied: ‘Concerning debt. By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, if a man were killed in the path of Allah, then lived, then was killed in the path of Allah, then lived, then was killed in the path of Allah, then lived, while still owing a debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was repaid.’ Ahmad transmitted it; a similar report is found in Sharh al-Sunnah. Its listed grading has not been studied (al-Albani).
