Mishkat al-Masabih 1750
وَعَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ وَأَبِي بَرْزَةَ قَالَا: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي جَنَازَةٍ فَرَأَى قَوْمًا قَدْ طَرَحُوا أَرْدَيْتَهُمْ يَمْشُونَ فِي قُمُصٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَبِفِعْلِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ تَأْخُذُونَ؟ أَوْ بِصَنِيعِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ تَشَبَّهُونَ؟ لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَدْعُوَ عَلَيْكُمْ دَعْوَةً تَرْجِعُونَ فِي غَيْرِ صُوَرِكُمْ» قَالَ: فَأخذُوا أرديتهم وَلم يعودوا لذَلِك. رَوَاهُ ابْن مَاجَه
Imran ibn Husayn and Abu Barza said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a funeral. He saw some people who had taken off their cloaks and were walking in their shirts. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Are you adopting the practice of the pre-Islamic people, or imitating their custom? I was on the verge of invoking a prayer against you that would make you return in forms other than your own.’ He said: They took their cloaks and did not do that again. Ibn Majah transmitted it.
