‘Abd Allah ibn Qurt reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The greatest days in Allah’s sight are the Day of Sacrifice, then the Day of Rest (Yawm al-Qarr).” Thawr said: It is the second day [of the days of sacrifice]. He said: Five or six sacrificial camels were brought near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they began crowding toward him, eager to be the first one he began with. When they had fallen on their sides [after slaughter], he said something quietly that I could not understand. I asked: “What did he say?” He replied: “Whoever wishes may take a portion.” [Abu Dawud]

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report gives no al-Albani grade. The phrase مَنْ شَاءَ اقْتَطَعَ is translated broadly as permission to take a portion.

The context does not specify what may be taken or cut off.

What item or portion is being offered?
