Abu Jurayy Jabir ibn Sulaym said: ‘I came to Medina and saw a man whose judgment people followed: he said nothing without their following it. I asked, “Who is this?” They said, “This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” I said to him twice, “Peace be upon you, Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Do not say, ‘Upon you be peace,’ for that is the greeting of the dead. Say, ‘Peace be upon you.’” I asked, “Are you the Messenger of Allah?” He said, “I am the Messenger of Allah, whom, if harm befalls you and you call upon Him, He removes it; if a year of famine comes upon you and you call upon Him, He makes crops grow for you; and if you are in barren land or a desert and your riding camel goes missing, and you call upon Him, He returns it to you.” I said, “Give me an instruction.” He said, “Never revile anyone.” After that, I reviled no free person, slave, camel, or sheep. He also said, “Do not regard any kindness as insignificant. Your speaking to your brother with an open, cheerful face is an act of kindness. Raise your lower garment to mid-calf; if you refuse, then to the ankles. Beware of letting the lower garment trail, for that is a form of conceit, and Allah does not love conceit. If someone insults you and reproaches you for something he knows about you, do not reproach him for something you know about him; the consequence of that will be upon him.” Abu Dawud transmitted it, and al-Tirmidhi transmitted the part about the greeting. Another version has: ‘Then its reward will be yours and its consequence will be his.’
