Abu Talha sent me to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in order to invite him (for meal). She had prepared a meal. So I came and found Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) along with some people. He looked at me, and I felt shy and said: Accept the invitation of Abu Talha. He (the Holy Prophet) asked the people to get up. Thereupon Abu Talha said: Allah's Messenger, I have prepared something for you. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) touched (the food) and invoked blessings upon it, and then said: Let ten persons from my Companions enter (the house). He then said: Eat, and (in the meanwhile) brought out something from between his fingers for them. They then began to eat until they had their fill and then went out. He then asked ten more men (to have the meal) and they ate to their fill, and the ten persons went on getting in (and eating the food) and then getting out until none was left amongst them who had not got in and eaten to his fill. He then collected (the remaining part of the food) and it (the quantity of the food) was the same (as it had been prior to the serving of guests).
The Book of Drinks - Sahih Muslim 2040b
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Master Muhammad, his family, and companions.
Miracle of Multiplication
This blessed hadith from Sahih Muslim demonstrates one of the clear miracles bestowed upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by Allah Almighty. The food, originally prepared for a limited number, multiplied through divine blessing to suffice numerous companions.
The Prophet's practice of touching the food and invoking blessings (barakah) teaches us the importance of beginning all matters with Allah's name and seeking His blessings in our sustenance.
Divine Blessing in Sustenance
Scholars explain that the miracle occurred through the Prophet's blessed hands and his supplication. This demonstrates that true abundance comes from Allah alone, not from material causes alone.
The fact that the food returned to its original quantity after feeding all companions shows the perfection of this miracle - both in expansion and restoration.
Spiritual Lessons
This event teaches us to trust in Allah's provision, to be generous hosts, and to recognize that blessings follow obedience to the Prophet's teachings.
The companions' conduct shows perfect etiquette: they came when invited, ate moderately, and departed without causing inconvenience - exemplary manners for all Muslims.
