حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الْمُثَنَّى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَائِلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَائِلٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ، أَنَّ طَارِقَ بْنَ سُوَيْدٍ الْجُعْفِيَّ، سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنِ الْخَمْرِ فَنَهَا أَوْ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَصْنَعَهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا أَصْنَعُهَا لِلدَّوَاءِ فَقَالَ " إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِدَوَاءٍ وَلَكِنَّهُ دَاءٌ " .

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna and Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us—and this is Ibn al-Muthanna wording: Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us: Shubah narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Alqamah ibn Wail, from his father Wail al-Hadrami, that Tariq ibn Suwayd al-Jufi asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about wine. He forbade—or disapproved of—making it. Tariq said, I make it only as medicine. He said, It is not medicine; rather, it is a disease.
