Allah only desires to take away any uncleanliness from you, O people of the household, and purify you (thorough purifying)
The Book of the Merits of the Companions - Sahih Muslim
This commentary pertains to the noble verse: "Allah only desires to take away any uncleanliness from you, O people of the household, and purify you (thorough purifying)."
Hadith Reference: Sahih Muslim 2424
This verse (33:33) is known as the Verse of Purification (Āyat al-Taṭhīr). The classical scholars, including Imām al-Ṭabarī and Ibn Kathīr, explain that "the people of the household" (Ahl al-Bayt) here specifically refers to the family of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). This is established by the authentic ḥadīth of the Cloak (Ḥadīth al-Kisā'), where the Prophet gathered Fāṭimah, 'Alī, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn under his cloak and supplicated for them, declaring them as his Ahl al-Bayt.
The phrase "take away any uncleanliness" refers to the removal of spiritual impurities, such as sin, doubt, and polytheism. The purification mentioned is of the utmost degree—a divine cleansing of the heart and soul, preparing them for the weighty responsibility of guiding the Ummah. This is a unique distinction bestowed upon them by Allah Himself.
Therefore, this verse stands as a profound testament to their impeccable spiritual status and serves as a foundation for the love and reverence the Muslim community is obliged to hold for them.
