Comment

The Book of al-'Aqiqah - Sunan an-Nasa'i 4219

"The Messenger of Allah offered an 'Aqiqah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, may Allah be please with them, two rams for each."

Commentary on the Hadith

This noble hadith establishes the Sunnah practice of 'Aqiqah for newborn children, demonstrating the Prophet's care for his grandsons and providing guidance for the Ummah.

The offering of two rams for each child indicates the recommended quantity for males, which differs from the single sheep prescribed for females, as established in other authentic narrations.

Scholars derive from this that 'Aqiqah is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) for those who have the means, to be performed on the seventh day after birth, though it remains valid if delayed.

The timing of this 'Aqiqah demonstrates the Prophet's implementation of Islamic rituals immediately upon their legislation, serving as a practical example for his followers.

Legal Rulings Derived

The preferred 'Aqiqah for a male child is two sheep, while for a female child, one sheep suffices.

'Aqiqah serves as redemption for the child and protection from harm, following the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him.

The meat should be distributed cooked rather than raw, with scholars recommending giving some as charity, feeding family and friends, and keeping portion for household.
