Amr ibn Shuayb reported from his father and grandfather that the Messenger of Allah was asked at what value a thief hand should be cut off. He said, “A hand is not cut off for fruit still hanging on a tree. Once it has been gathered into the drying store, the hand is cut off if its value reaches the price of a shield. A hand is not cut off for livestock grazing in the open; once it is brought into the enclosure, the hand is cut off if its value reaches the price of a shield.”
