"I heard 'Amr bin Al-Harith say: 'The Messenger of Allah did not leave behind anything except his white mule, his weapon and some land which he left as a charity.'"
Commentary on the Hadith
This noble hadith from Sunan an-Nasa'i demonstrates the profound asceticism (zuhd) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his complete detachment from worldly possessions. Despite being the leader of the Muslim community, he departed this world leaving only the most essential items.
The white mule was for transportation in fulfilling his duties, the weapon for the defense of the Ummah, and the land he endowed as perpetual charity (sadaqah jariyah) for ongoing benefit to the Muslim community. This teaches us that worldly wealth should be utilized for higher purposes rather than accumulated for personal luxury.
Scholars note that this hadith exemplifies the Prophet's perfect trust in Allah's provision and his focus on the Hereafter. It serves as a powerful lesson for Muslims to prioritize charitable giving and avoid excessive attachment to material possessions, following the exemplary conduct of Allah's Messenger.
