Hadith Text
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer (Qiyam) out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins."'
Commentary on the Virtues of Night Prayer
This noble hadith establishes the immense virtue of performing Qiyam al-Layl during the blessed nights of Ramadan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) guarantees complete forgiveness of past sins for those who fulfill two conditions: performing the night prayers with sincere faith (iman) and seeking divine reward (ihtisab).
Conditions for Acceptance
The phrase "out of faith" indicates the necessity of correct belief and sincere intention, distinguishing this worship from mere habit or showing off. "In the hope of reward" signifies performing the prayer solely for Allah's pleasure, not for worldly recognition. These conditions ensure the spiritual purity required for such magnificent forgiveness.
Scope of Forgiveness
Scholars explain that "previous sins" refers to all minor sins, as major sins require specific repentance. The combination of fasting during Ramadan's days and praying during its nights creates a powerful spiritual state that erases transgressions and elevates the believer's rank with Allah.
Practical Implementation
This includes Tarawih prayers and any voluntary night worship during Ramadan. The minimum is what constitutes "prayer" - even a few rak'ahs with proper devotion. The best practice is to pray in congregation, following the sunnah of the righteous predecessors.
