Commentary on the Hadith

This noble hadith, narrated in Sunan an-Nasa'i, contains profound wisdom regarding the spiritual and moral dimensions of fasting. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described fasting as a "shield" (junnah in Arabic), indicating its protective nature for the believer.

Fasting serves as a shield in multiple dimensions: it protects the believer from sinful speech and actions, as the fasting person is more conscious of Allah and refrains from prohibited matters. It shields one from the Hellfire, as authentic traditions indicate fasting will intercede for the believer on Judgment Day. Furthermore, it acts as a shield against base desires and worldly temptations, strengthening one's spiritual resolve and self-restraint.

The scholars explain that just as a physical shield protects a warrior in battle, the fast protects the believer in their spiritual struggle against the lower self (nafs) and Satan's whispers. This teaching reminds believers to approach fasting with proper intention and consciousness, recognizing it as a means of spiritual protection rather than mere physical abstinence. The fasting person should be particularly vigilant about guarding their tongue, eyes, ears, and limbs from sinful behavior to fully benefit from this divine shield.
