The Book of Fasting - Sunan an-Nasa'i 2105

"When Ramadan begins, the gates of mercy are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up."

Commentary on the Hadith

This noble hadith from Sunan an-Nasa'i reveals the immense spiritual transformation that occurs with the advent of Ramadan. The opening of mercy's gates signifies Allah's boundless compassion and readiness to accept repentance and reward good deeds abundantly during this blessed month.

The closing of Hell's gates demonstrates divine protection from evil inclinations and sinful temptations, while the chaining of devils indicates a significant reduction in satanic whispers, allowing believers to focus on worship with greater ease and purity of intention.

Scholarly Insights

Classical scholars explain that these conditions create an optimal spiritual environment, but require the believer's active engagement through fasting, prayer, and Quranic recitation. The chains on devils restrict their influence but do not eliminate human base desires (nafs), making personal struggle (mujahadah) essential.

Imam al-Nawawi emphasizes that this divine assistance facilitates worship but doesn't absolve individuals from spiritual responsibility. The opening of mercy gates invites increased supplication, while the closed Hell gates remind us of the ultimate purpose: salvation from divine punishment.
