The Book of Forgetfulness (In Prayer)

Sunan an-Nasa'i 1308

Hadith Text

"I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the torment of the grave, and he said: 'Yes, the torment of the grave is real.'" 'Aishah said: "After that I never saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) offer any prayer but he would seek refuge with Allah (SWT) from the torment of the grave."

Scholarly Commentary

This narration establishes two fundamental matters of creed: the reality of the grave's punishment and the Prophetic practice of seeking protection from it in prayer. The Prophet's affirmation confirms this as an article of faith, while his consistent invocation demonstrates its importance.

The torment of the grave is a reality affirmed by Quranic texts and multiple authentic hadiths. It serves as the initial stage of the afterlife, where souls experience either comfort or punishment based on their deeds. The Prophet's continuous seeking of refuge teaches us the gravity of this matter and the necessity of divine protection.

The wisdom behind the Prophet's action lies in teaching the ummah the importance of this supplication. Even the most protected of creation, the Messenger of Allah, consistently sought refuge, indicating our greater need. This practice should be incorporated into our daily prayers, particularly in the final tashahhud before tasleem.

Legal Ruling

Seeking refuge from the torment of the grave in prayer is a confirmed Sunnah (mustahabb), not an obligation. The recommended wording is: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi-l-qabr" (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave). This should be recited after the final tashahhud and before concluding the prayer.
