"When the time of menstruation comes, stop praying, and when it goes, perform Ghusl."
The Book of Purification - Sunan an-Nasa'i 202
"When the time of menstruation comes, stop praying, and when it goes, perform Ghusl."
Scholarly Commentary
This hadith establishes the fundamental ruling regarding menstruation and prayer. When a woman experiences menstrual bleeding, she must immediately cease performing prayers, as her state of ritual impurity (ḥadath al-akbar) prevents the validity of worship.
The command to perform Ghusl (ritual bath) after menstruation ends is obligatory. This purification restores her to a state of ritual purity, making her eligible for prayer, fasting, reciting Quran, and entering mosques.
Scholars emphasize that the Ghusl must be complete - involving intention, washing the entire body, and ensuring water reaches every part. The timing is immediate upon cessation of bleeding, though there is flexibility for the first prayer time after purification.
Legal Implications
During menstruation: All prayers are invalid and cannot be made up later. Fasting is prohibited but must be compensated. Sexual intercourse is forbidden. Circumambulation of Kaaba is not permitted.
After purification: All religious obligations resume immediately. The woman regains full capacity for worship and religious activities upon completion of Ghusl.
