The Book of Seeking Refuge with Allah

Sunan an-Nasa'i - Hadith 5432

Hadith Text

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said to him: "O Ibn 'Abis, shall I not tell you of the best thing with which those who seek refuge with Allah may do so?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak.", "Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind." - these two Surahs."

Scholarly Commentary

This noble hadith directs believers to the most excellent means of seeking protection with Allah - the recitation of Surah al-Falaq (The Daybreak) and Surah an-Nas (Mankind). These two surahs are collectively known as al-Mu'awwidhatayn (the two protectors).

The Prophet (ﷺ) specifically identified these surahs as the ultimate refuge because they comprehensively address all forms of evil - both apparent and hidden, from creation and from human souls. Surah al-Falaq protects from external harms while Surah an-Nas protects from internal whisperings.

Scholars explain that these surahs contain complete tawhid (monotheism) by affirming Allah's exclusive Lordship over all creation and His absolute power to grant protection. The repetition of "I seek refuge" emphasizes the urgency and necessity of divine protection in all matters.

Practical Application

The Sunnah practice is to recite these surahs three times each morning and evening, and before sleeping. They should also be recited when feeling fear, during illness, or when seeking general protection.

Ibn al-Qayyim states that these surahs are a spiritual fortress for the believer, protecting them from physical and spiritual harms when recited with presence of heart and firm belief in their efficacy through Allah's permission.
