The Book of Seeking Refuge with Allah - Sunan an-Nasa'i 5442

The Prophet [SAW] used to seek refuge (with Allah) from four things: From knowledge that is of no benefit, from a heart that does not feel humble, from a supplication that is not heard, and a soul that is never satisfied.

Commentary on the Four Matters

This noble hadith from Sunan an-Nasa'i reveals the Prophet's profound understanding of spiritual dangers. He sought protection from Allah against these four afflictions that corrupt both knowledge and worship.

1. Knowledge without benefit: This refers to learning that doesn't lead to righteous action or increase in taqwa. The scholars say such knowledge becomes a burden rather than a blessing, and may even lead to arrogance.

2. Unhumble heart: A heart devoid of khushu' (humility and reverence) cannot properly receive divine guidance. Without humility, acts of worship become mere motions without spiritual substance.

3. Unanswered supplication: This occurs when du'a lacks the proper conditions - sincerity, lawful sustenance, and turning wholeheartedly to Allah. The Prophet taught us to avoid anything that might prevent our prayers from being accepted.

4. Insatiable soul: The nafs that is never content leads to constant worldly pursuit and distraction from the Hereafter. It creates ingratitude and prevents spiritual contentment (qana'ah).

Spiritual Protection

By seeking refuge from these four matters, the Prophet [SAW] taught us comprehensive spiritual protection. These prayers guard against corruption of knowledge, worship, and character - the essential pillars of faith.

The wise believer should regularly make this du'a, reflecting on its meanings and working to embody its opposite virtues: beneficial knowledge, humble heart, accepted supplications, and content soul.
