Translation
It was narrated from Sulaiman bin Yasar that he heard Abu Hurairah say

"I heard the Messenger of Allah [SAW] say in his supplication: 'Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa fitnatid-dajjali, wa fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the trial of the grave, and the tribulation of the Dajjal, and the trials of life and death.)'"

The Book of Seeking Refuge with Allah - Sunan an-Nasa'i 5515

This profound supplication from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) encompasses comprehensive protection from three major trials that every believer will face.

Tafsir of "Fitnatil-Qabri" (Trial of the Grave)

The trial of the grave refers to the questioning by angels Munkar and Nakir after burial. The believer will be tested regarding faith in Allah, acceptance of Muhammad's prophethood, and adherence to Islam. Scholars explain this as both a physical and spiritual test where the righteous will find comfort while the wicked will face punishment.

Tafsir of "Fitnatid-Dajjali" (Tribulation of Dajjal)

The Dajjal (False Messiah) represents the ultimate trial of faith before Judgment Day. Classical commentators emphasize his extraordinary abilities to deceive people through apparent miracles, his one-eyed appearance, and his claim to divinity. Seeking refuge from this trial demonstrates awareness of this great fitnah that will challenge even the strongest believers.

Tafsir of "Fitnatil-Mahya wal-Mamat" (Trials of Life and Death)

This comprehensive phrase encompasses all worldly temptations and the final moments of life. Scholars interpret "trials of life" as including wealth, family, status, and desires that may lead one astray. "Trials of death" refer to the difficulty of the soul's departure and maintaining firm faith during the final breath. The combination shows the Prophet's concern for comprehensive protection throughout our entire earthly journey.

Scholarly Wisdom and Benefits

Imam Nawawi and other classical scholars highlight that this supplication covers protection in this world, the grave, and the hereafter. The sequence demonstrates the progression of trials: worldly life, the grave, and then the ultimate trial of Dajjal. Reciting this regularly strengthens faith and prepares the believer for these inevitable tests with divine protection.
