The Book of Seeking Refuge with Allah - Sunan an-Nasa'i 5526

"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: 'Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa min sharri ma lam a'mal ba'd (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done and from the evil of what I have not done yet.)'"

Commentary on the Supplication

This profound supplication encompasses seeking protection from two categories of evil: past misdeeds and potential future sins. The first part acknowledges human fallibility and seeks Allah's protection from the consequences of previous wrong actions, whether intentional or unintentional.

The second portion demonstrates remarkable spiritual foresight, seeking refuge from evils not yet committed. This reflects the believer's awareness of their own weakness and dependence on Divine protection against future temptations and missteps.

Scholarly Insights

Classical scholars note that this comprehensive prayer teaches humility and constant vigilance. It acknowledges that protection from sin requires continuous Divine assistance, not merely human willpower alone.

The supplication covers both known and unknown evils, demonstrating complete reliance on Allah's guardianship over all aspects of one's spiritual journey, past and future.

Practical Application

This prayer is recommended for regular recitation, particularly after formal prayers and during moments of spiritual reflection. It serves as a constant reminder of our need for Allah's protection in all temporal dimensions of our existence.
