Translation
It was narrated that Farwah bin Nawfal said

"I asked 'Aishah: 'Tell me of something that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say in his supplication.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa min sharri ma lam a'mal ba'd (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done and from the evil of what I have not done.)'"

The Book of Seeking Refuge with Allah

Sunan an-Nasa'i - Hadith 5527

Hadith Text

"I asked 'Aishah: 'Tell me of something that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say in his supplication.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] used to say: Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa min sharri ma lam a'mal ba'd (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done and from the evil of what I have not done.)'"

Scholarly Commentary

This profound supplication encompasses comprehensive protection from all forms of evil. The first part seeks refuge from the evil of past deeds - sins committed knowingly or unknowingly, whose consequences may manifest later. The second part seeks protection from future evils not yet committed, demonstrating profound awareness of human weakness and the need for divine protection against potential sins.

The Prophet's choice of words reveals deep wisdom: "ma 'amiltu" (what I have done) includes all completed actions, while "ma lam a'mal ba'd" (what I have not done yet) covers all future possibilities. This comprehensive approach teaches believers to seek Allah's protection not only from known evils but also from unknown dangers that may arise from both past and future actions.

This supplication reflects the perfect state of servitude to Allah, combining acknowledgment of one's shortcomings with complete reliance on divine mercy and protection. It serves as a constant reminder that true safety lies only in Allah's guardianship against all forms of spiritual harm.
