Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

On the authority of Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took me by the shoulder and said, ‘Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.’ Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say, ‘When evening comes, do not expect the morning; and when morning comes, do not expect the evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death.’ [Narrated by al-Bukhari].

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ: إذَا أَمْسَيْتَ فَلَا تَنْتَظِرْ الصَّبَاحَ،

The witness adds ‘to live until’ in brackets; the Arabic says simply not to expect the morning/evening.

Is this bracketed wording explanatory? It is not included in the translation.

  • وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَقُولُ: إذَا أَمْسَيْتَ فَلَا تَنْتَظِرْ الصَّبَاحَ،

The source changes from the Prophet’s words to Ibn ‘Umar’s own counsel; the speaker boundary is preserved here.

Can the editorial separation of the narrator’s statement be confirmed in the source edition?
