Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Nasr ibn ‘Ali al-Jahdami narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Suqah, from Nafi‘ ibn Jubayr, from Umm Salamah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who mentioned an army that would be swallowed by the earth. Umm Salamah said, ‘Perhaps there will be among them some who were compelled [to join].’ He replied, ‘They will be raised according to their intentions.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan gharib hadith through this route. This hadith has also been narrated from Nafi‘ ibn Jubayr, from ‘A’ishah, from the Prophet.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic term المُكْرَه refers to someone compelled or forced. The English witness renders it as ‘averse’; the translation follows the coercion sense while preserving the source’s uncertainty in a review issue.

The English witness renders المُكْرَه as ‘averse,’ while its usual sense is someone compelled; the context refers to people forced to accompany the army.

Confirm the intended sense of المُكْرَه against a critical commentary; the translation provisionally uses ‘compelled.’
