حَدَّثَنَا بُنْدَارٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ قَدَّمَ الْخُطْبَةَ قَبْلَ الصَّلاَةِ مَرْوَانُ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لِمَرْوَانَ خَالَفْتَ السُّنَّةَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ يَا فُلاَنُ تُرِكَ مَا هُنَالِكَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ قَضَى مَا عَلَيْهِ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ مَنْ رَأَى مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُنْكِرْهُ بِيَدِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِقَلْبِهِ وَذَلِكَ أَضْعَفُ الإِيمَانِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

Bun dar narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Tariq ibn Shihab, who said: Marwan was the first to put the sermon before the prayer. A man stood and said to Marwan, ‘You have opposed the Sunnah.’ He replied, ‘So-and-so, that practice has been abandoned.’ Abu Sa‘id said, ‘As for this man, he has discharged his duty.’ I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘Whoever among you sees a wrong, let him change it with his hand. If he cannot, then with his tongue; and if he cannot, then with his heart—and that is the weakest degree of faith.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

  • Marwan’s reply ترك ما هنالك is terse and elliptical; ‘that practice has been abandoned’ is provisional, and the source does not spell out its referent.

  • قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ قَدَّمَ الْخُطْبَةَ قَبْلَ الصَّلاَةِ مَرْوَانُ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لِمَرْوَانَ خَالَفْتَ السُّنَّةَ ‏.

    Marwan’s terse reply ترك ما هنالك is elliptical; the source does not specify what exactly has been abandoned.

    Confirm the intended referent of Marwan’s reply from a fuller commentary or parallel transmission.

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.
