Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us: my father narrated to us, saying: I heard al-Nu‘man ibn Rashid narrate from al-Zuhri, from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Harith, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a prayer at length. They said, ‘Messenger of Allah, you have performed a prayer unlike the prayers you normally perform.’ He replied, ‘Yes. It was a prayer of hope and fear. In it I asked Allah for three things: He granted me two and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy my community by drought, and He granted that. I asked Him not to empower an enemy from outside them over them, and He granted that. I asked Him not to make some of them suffer at the hands of others, but He withheld that.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan gharib sahih hadith. There are reports on this topic from Sa‘d and Ibn ‘Umar.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The three requests are counted explicitly: protection from widespread drought, from an outside enemy, and from internal violence. The source says two were granted and one withheld; it does not identify the last request as a separate punishment beyond the wording translated.
