Qutaybah narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Asma’ al-Rahabi, from Thawban, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Allah drew the earth together for me, and I saw its east and west. The dominion of my community will reach as far as the part of it that was drawn together for me. I was given the two treasures, the red and the yellow. I asked my Lord for my community: that He not destroy it by a widespread drought, and that He not empower an enemy from outside it to overrun its heartland.’ My Lord said, ‘O Muhammad, when I decree a matter, it cannot be turned back. I have granted your community that I will not destroy them by a widespread drought, and that I will not empower an enemy from outside them to overrun their heartland, even if those in its regions—or, he said, those between its regions—unite against them; but some of them will destroy others, and some will take others captive.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic says the two treasures are ‘the red and the yellow’; the English witness has ‘red and white,’ so the translation follows the Arabic reading. The word بَيْضَتَهُمْ is rendered ‘their heartland’ in light of the English witness’s ‘heart of power’; the precise geographical sense merits review.

The Arabic says the second treasure is ‘yellow’ (الأصفر), while the English witness reads ‘white.’ The translation follows the Arabic.

Confirm the color reading against a critical edition if available; retain the supplied Arabic unless corrected by source evidence.

The term بَيْضَتَهُمْ is rendered as ‘their heartland’ following the witness’s gloss ‘heart of power,’ but its precise referent is not explicit in the Arabic excerpt.

Confirm the best rendering of بَيْضَة in this political context.
