‘Imran ibn Musa al-Qazzaz al-Basri narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Warith ibn Sa‘id narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Juhadah narrated to us, from a man, from Tawus, from Umm Malik al-Bahziyyah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a tribulation and indicated that it was near. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, who will be the best of people during it?’ He replied, ‘A man among his livestock, fulfilling what is due upon them and worshiping his Lord; and a man holding his horse’s reins, striking fear into the enemy, while they fear him.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from Umm Mubashshir, Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, and Ibn ‘Abbas. This is a hasan gharib hadith through this route. Al-Layth ibn Abi Sulaym also narrated it from Tawus, from Umm Malik al-Bahziyyah, from the Prophet.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic chain includes an unnamed transmitter between Muhammad ibn Juhadah and Tawus. The expression يُخِيفُ الْعَدُوَّ وَيُخِيفُونَهُ is rendered as striking fear into the enemy while being feared by them.

The Arabic adds the related reports, route grading, and an alternative narration through al-Layth ibn Abi Sulaym beyond the main witness wording.
