Hannad narrated to us: Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated two reports to us. I have seen one of them, and I am waiting for the other. He said: ‘Trust descended into the roots of men’s hearts. Then the Qur’an descended, and they learned from the Qur’an and from the Sunnah.’ Then he told us about trust being removed: ‘A man will sleep, and trust will be taken from his heart, leaving a trace like a small speck. Then he will sleep again, and trust will be taken from his heart, leaving a trace like a blister—like an ember you roll over your foot until it blisters. You see it raised, yet there is nothing inside it.’ He then took a pebble and rolled it over his leg. He said: ‘People will come to a time when they trade with one another and scarcely anyone will fulfill a trust, until it is said, “In the clan of so-and-so there is a trustworthy man,” and a man is praised, “How capable, clever, and intelligent he is!”—though there is not a mustard seed’s weight of faith in his heart.’ Hudhayfah said: ‘A time came when I did not care with whom among you I traded: if he was a Muslim, his religion would make him return what was due to me; and if he was a Jew or a Christian, his collector would return it to me. But today I would trade only with so-and-so and so-and-so.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.

  • The Arabic uses two distinct image words for the trace left by departing trust; they are rendered as a small speck and then a blister. The final phrase sa‘iy refers to a collector or agent; the translation does not specify a particular office.
