Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Sinan ibn Abi Sinan, from Abu Waqid al-Laythi, that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Khaybar, he passed a tree belonging to the polytheists called Dhat Anwat, on which they hung their weapons. They said, ‘Messenger of Allah, make a Dhat Anwat for us, just as they have a Dhat Anwat.’ The Prophet said, ‘Glory be to Allah! This is like what the people of Moses said: “Make for us a god, just as they have gods.” By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will surely follow the ways of those who came before you.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Abu Waqid al-Laythi’s name was al-Harith ibn ‘Awf. There are also reports on this topic from Abu Sa‘id and Abu Hurayrah.

  • The Arabic source says the expedition was to Khaybar, whereas the English witness says Hunayn; the translation follows the Arabic reading.

The Arabic says the Prophet was setting out for Khaybar, but the English witness says Hunayn; these are different locations and the translation follows the supplied Arabic.
