Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Bun dar narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Furat al-Qazzaz, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah ibn Asid, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked down at us from an upper room while we were discussing the Hour. The Prophet said, ‘The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the sun rising from its place of setting; Gog and Magog; the Beast; three sinkings of the earth—one in the east, one in the west, and one in the Arabian Peninsula; and a fire emerging from the depths of Aden that drives or gathers people, spending the night wherever they spend the night and resting at midday wherever they rest.’ Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Waki‘ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Furat, something similar, and he added ‘the smoke.’ Hannad narrated to us: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Furat al-Qazzaz, with a report like Waki‘’s from Sufyan. Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated to us: Shu‘bah and al-Mas‘udi both heard from Furat al-Qazzaz a report like ‘Abd al-Rahman’s from Sufyan, from Furat, and added ‘the Dajjal or the smoke.’ Abu Musa Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Abu al-Nu‘man al-Hakam ibn ‘Abd Allah al-‘Ijli narrated to us, from Shu‘bah, from Furat, with a report like Abu Dawud’s from Shu‘bah, and added: ‘The tenth is either a wind that casts them into the sea, or the descent of Jesus son of Mary.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from ‘Ali, Abu Hurayrah, Umm Salamah, and Safiyyah bint Huyayy. This is a hasan sahih hadith.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The first version names seven signs after announcing ten; later routes add smoke, the Dajjal-or-smoke variant, and alternatives for the tenth sign. These are preserved as the source’s differing transmission wordings rather than combined into a single reconciled list.

The Arabic transmits different additions across routes: smoke; Dajjal or smoke; and, for the tenth sign, a wind casting people into the sea or Jesus’ descent. The English witness gives only the first route’s list.

Keep each additional sign attached to the route that transmits it; do not merge the alternatives into one list.
