Hannad narrated to us: Abu Mu‘awiyah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, from Abu Dharr, who said: I entered the mosque at sunset, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting there. He said, ‘Abu Dharr, do you know where this sun goes?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He replied, ‘It goes to seek permission to prostrate, and permission is granted to it. It is as though it is then told, “Rise from where you came,” so it rises from its place of setting.’ Then he recited, ‘And that is its fixed course’ (Qur’an 36:38). Abu Dharr said: This is the recitation of ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud. Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from Safwan ibn ‘Assal, Hudhayfah ibn Asid, Anas, and Abu Musa. This is a hasan sahih hadith.

The phrase وَذَلِكَ مُسْتَقَرٌّ لَهَا is rendered ‘and that is its fixed course,’ matching the supplied English witness; the source specifically identifies this as Ibn Mas‘ud’s recitation.
