Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi, Abu Bakr ibn Nafi‘, and more than one other narrated to us: Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, from Habibah, from Umm Habibah, from Zaynab bint Jahsh, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) awoke from sleep with his face reddened, saying, ‘There is no deity but Allah,’ and repeated it three times. ‘Woe to the Arabs because of an evil that has drawn near! Today an opening like this has been made in the barrier of Gog and Magog.’ He formed a circle with his fingers to show it. Zaynab said, ‘Messenger of Allah, will we be destroyed while righteous people are among us?’ He replied, ‘Yes, when wickedness becomes widespread.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith, and Sufyan gave a sound transmission of it. Al-Humaydi, ‘Ali ibn al-Madini, and more than one hadith master narrated similar wording from Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah. Al-Humaydi said that Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah said: ‘I memorized from al-Zuhri in this hadith four women: Zaynab bint Abi Salamah from Habibah—and these two are the Prophet’s stepdaughters—from Umm Habibah, from Zaynab bint Jahsh, the Prophet’s wife.’ Ma‘mar and others narrated this hadith from al-Zuhri without mentioning Habibah. Some of Ibn ‘Uyaynah’s students narrated it from him without mentioning Umm Habibah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The phrase وَعَقَدَ عَشْرًا describes a hand gesture; it is rendered provisionally as forming a circle with the fingers, following the English witness’s indication that he illustrated the opening with his fingers.

  • The source calls Zaynab bint Abi Salamah and Habibah the Prophet’s two stepdaughters; the translation preserves the source’s identification without attempting to resolve it editorially.

The gesture وَعَقَدَ عَشْرًا is terse; the translation follows the witness’s interpretation as a circle formed with the fingers.

Confirm the exact hand gesture intended by the phrase against a fuller commentary.

The Arabic explains four female transmitters and records that later routes omit Habibah or Umm Habibah; the English witness omits these chain variants.

Retain the full chain clarification and both variant omissions.
