Qutaybah narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from ‘Ayyash ibn ‘Abbas, from Bukayr ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Ashajj, from Busr ibn Sa‘id, that Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas said during the turmoil at the time of ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan: ‘I testify that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “A tribulation will come in which the one sitting is better than the one standing; the one standing is better than the one walking; and the one walking is better than the one hastening.”’ He asked, ‘What do you think if someone enters my house and reaches out his hand to kill me?’ He replied, ‘Be like the son of Adam.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There are reports on this topic from Abu Hurayrah, Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, Abu Bakrah, Ibn Mas‘ud, Abu Waqid, Abu Musa, and Kharashah. This is a hasan hadith. Some transmitters narrated this hadith from al-Layth ibn Sa‘d with an additional man in the chain. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith has also been narrated from Sa‘d, from the Prophet, through another route.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source’s final exhortation ‘be like the son of Adam’ is left without expanding its allusion. The Arabic notes a chain variant with an additional transmitter.
وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ .
The Arabic records that some transmitters added a man to the chain through al-Layth ibn Sa‘d, a detail absent from the English witness.
Retain the isnad variant and Abu ‘Isa’s note that the report has other routes from Sa‘d.
