‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ubayd, from ‘Udaythah bint Uhban ibn Sayfi al-Ghifari, who said: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib came to my father and invited him to go out with him. My father said to him, ‘My close friend and your cousin charged me that, when people differ, I should take a sword made of wood. I have taken it; if you wish, I will go out with you carrying it.’ She said: ‘So he left him.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There is a report on this topic from Muhammad ibn Maslamah. This is a hasan gharib hadith; we know it only through the narration of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ubayd.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The father’s phrase ‘my close friend and your cousin’ refers indirectly to the Prophet, but the translation leaves the source’s wording intact. The wooden sword expresses his stated response to civil discord.
وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ .
The English witness gives the narrative but omits Abu ‘Isa’s topic cross-reference, grading, and note that this is known only through ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ubayd.
