Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Abi ‘Amr. He said: ‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn Ja‘far informed us, from ‘Amr ibn Abi ‘Amr, from ‘Abd Allah—namely, ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Ansari al-Ashhali—from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘The Hour will not come until the most fortunate person in worldly life is a luki‘ son of a luki‘.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a gharib hadith; we know it only through the narration of ‘Amr ibn Abi ‘Amr.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Luki‘ is an insulting term for a low or contemptible person; it is retained transliterated because the repeated expression ‘luki‘ son of luki‘’ carries the source’s derisive force.

  • وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الأَنْصَارِيُّ الأَشْهَلِيُّ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْيَمَانِ،

The expression لُكَعُ ابْنُ لُكَعَ is a contemptuous term and has no exact single-word English equivalent; it is retained as ‘luki‘ son of luki‘’ and glossed.

Confirm the preferred English rendering of this insult if a house style exists.
