Salih ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Tirmidhi narrated to us: al-Faraj ibn Fadalah Abu Fadalah al-Shami narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Sa‘id, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘When my community does fifteen things, calamity will befall it.’ It was asked, ‘What are they, Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘When spoils are circulated among certain people; trust is treated as booty; zakat is treated as a fine; a man obeys his wife and disobeys his mother; he is kind to his friend and shuns his father; voices rise in mosques; the leader of a people is the vilest among them; a man is honored out of fear of his evil; wine is drunk; silk is worn; singing women and musical instruments are taken up; and the later members of this community curse its earlier members. At that point, let them await a red wind, a sinking of the earth, and transformation.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This is a gharib hadith. We know it as a report from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib only through this route. No one narrated it from Yahya ibn Sa‘id al-Ansari except al-Faraj ibn Fadalah. Some hadith scholars criticized al-Faraj and considered him weak in memory, though Waki‘ and more than one imam narrated from him.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source gives fifteen traits; related actions are separated to preserve the count: obeying one’s wife, disobeying one’s mother, kindness to a friend, and shunning one’s father; singing women and instruments are likewise counted separately.
The phrase دُوَلاً describes wealth or spoils being circulated among people; the exact implication may be preferential or rotating distribution, so ‘circulated among certain people’ is provisional.
The phrase الْمَغْنَمُ دُوَلاً is concise and may indicate spoils or public wealth circulating among particular people or being distributed by turns.
Confirm the preferred interpretation of دُوَلاً from a fuller commentary; the translation provisionally says ‘circulated among certain people.’
