‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti narrated to us, from al-Mustalim ibn Sa‘id, from Rumayh al-Judhami, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘When public revenues are circulated among certain people, trust is treated as booty, zakat as a fine, knowledge is sought for other than religion, a man obeys his wife and disobeys his mother, draws his friend close and distances his father, voices rise in mosques, the tribe is led by its wicked member, the leader of the people is the vilest among them, a man is honored out of fear of his evil, singing women and musical instruments become widespread, wine is drunk, and the later members of this community curse its earlier members, then let them await a red wind, an earthquake, a sinking of the earth, transformation, pelting with stones, and signs following one another like the beads of a worn necklace whose cord has been cut.’ Abu ‘Isa said: There is a report on this topic from ‘Ali. This is a gharib hadith; we know it only through this route.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The phrase الْفَيْءُ دُوَلاً refers to revenues or spoils passing among people; ‘circulated among certain people’ is provisional. The source describes the final succession of signs with the simile of necklace beads falling after the cord breaks.
The phrase الْفَيْءُ دُوَلاً is concise and may describe public revenues being circulated among certain people or distributed by turns.
Confirm the precise force of دُوَلاً against a fuller commentary; the provisional wording follows the source’s image of circulation.
