‘Alī ibn Ḥujr narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Sharīk ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Uṣm, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said that the Messenger of Allah said: “Among Thaqīf there will be a great liar and a destroyer.”
Abū ‘Īsā said: The liar is said to be al-Mukhtār ibn Abī ‘Ubayd, and the destroyer al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf. Abū Dāwūd Sulaymān ibn Salm al-Balkhī narrated to us; al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl informed us, from Hishām ibn Ḥassān, who said: They counted those whom al-Ḥajjāj had put to death while in custody, and the number reached 120,000.
Abū ‘Īsā said: Reports on this topic are also related from Asmā’ bint Abī Bakr. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Wāqid narrated to us; Sharīk narrated to us a similar report through this chain. This is a ḥasan gharīb hadith; we know it only through Sharīk. Sharīk says the narrator’s name was ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Uṣm, whereas Isrā’īl says it was ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Uṣmah.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic صَبْرًا in the account of al-Ḥajjāj’s victims refers to people put to death after being seized or held; “while in custody” is a cautious rendering.
The source itself records a variant in the narrator’s name: Sharīk gives ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Uṣm, while Isrā’īl gives ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Uṣmah.
أَحْصَوْا مَا قَتَلَ الْحَجَّاجُ صَبْرًا فَبَلَغَ مِائَةَ أَلْفٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفَ قَتِيلٍ
The adverb ṣabran indicates execution after capture or detention; the exact English phrasing is interpretive.
Should this be rendered more explicitly as “executed after capture”?
وَشَرِيكٌ يَقُولُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُصْمٍ وَإِسْرَائِيلُ يَقُولُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَصْمَةَ
The two transmitters report variant forms of this narrator’s name.
No resolution is supplied by this passage; should the variant be retained as recorded?
