Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Yaḥyā ibn Mūsā narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Ma‘mar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, from his father, who said: ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb was asked, “Would you appoint a successor?” He replied: “If I appoint one, then Abū Bakr appointed one; and if I do not appoint one, the Messenger of Allah did not appoint one.”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This report has a lengthy story. This is a ṣaḥīḥ hadith, transmitted through more than one route from Ibn ‘Umar.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness gives the saying but omits al-Tirmidhī’s closing note about the longer account and the report’s authenticity and routes.

The Arabic source adds a compiler note not present in the English witness.

Should a fuller English witness be located for this note?
