Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Baṣrī narrated to us; Khālid ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Ḥabīb ibn al-Zubayr, who said: I heard ‘Abd Allāh ibn Abī al-Hudhayl say: Some people from Rabī‘ah were with ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ when a man from Bakr ibn Wā’il said, “Quraysh must surely give up this authority, or Allah will surely place it in the hands of a great body of Arabs outside Quraysh.” ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ said, “You have lied. I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Quraysh will govern the people, in prosperity and adversity, until the Day of Resurrection.’”

Abū ‘Īsā said: Reports on this topic are also related from Ibn Mas‘ūd, Ibn ‘Umar, and Jābir. This is a ḥasan gharīb ṣaḥīḥ hadith.
